Basic Romper (0 - 18 months) EASY for BEGGINERS.

Materials:
3mm needles
Approx. 100g of wool
10 buttons of your choice (mine are 10mm but you may get away with up to 12mm depending on the stretch of the yarn you chose).

Cast on:

Start by casting on the amount of stitches necessary to achieve the centimetres listed below for your age using needles half a millimetre smaller than the ones you are going to use (in this case 2,5mm):
New born: 18cm
1 to 3 months: 20cm
3 to 6 months:22cm
6 to 9 months: 24cm
12 to 18 months: 26cm

We start by knitting the back waistband in K2,P2 for ten rows, but opening buttonholes on the fifth row: Start by dividing the work in two equal parts. Make the buttonholes 8sts apart for new born and at 10sts for any other sizes just as I explain in the video (CLICK HERE TO WATCH)

We now change to our 3mm needles with which we are going to knit the rest of the work.

Back of the romper:
We now need to knit straight for the back area of the romper:
CM to knit:
New born: 11cm
1 to 3 months: 12cm
3 to 6 months: 14cm
6 to 9 months: 16cm
12 to 18 months: 18cm

Once you have achieved the centimetres you need for your size, we start decreasing:
K5sts / K2tog / Knit to the last 7 sts / K2tog / K5 on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE WORK until we have approx. 7cm of stitches left on our needle for our crotch.

Knit 8 rows for our crotch.

Front of the romper:
Now we need to increase: K5sts / Y.O / knit to the last 5 sts / Y.O / K5sts
On the BACK OF THE WORK we knit the Y.O sts through the back to avoid creating a hole.
Continue increasing until you achieve 3cm LESS than the amount you cast on at the beginning.

Width to achieve:
New born: 18cm - 3cm = 15cm
1 to 3 months: 20cm - 3cm= 17 cm
3 to 6 months:22cm - 3cm= 19cm
6 to 9 months: 24cm - 3cm= 21cm
12 to 18 months: 26cm - 3cm= 23cm

Now we need to knit upwards opening buttonholes:
New born: open buttonholes every 16 rows.
1 to 3 months: open buttonholes every 20 rows.
3 to 6 months: open buttonholes every 24 rows.
6 to 9 months: open buttonholes every 28 rows.
12 to 18 months: open buttonholes every 32 rows.

Height to knit at the same time as we do the buttonholes:
New born: 11cm
1 to 3 months: 12cm
3 to 6 months: 14cm
6 to 9 months: 16cm
12 to 18 months: 18cm

Now we have to decrease again, just as we did at the bottom but every other front row like this:
1st. K5, K2tog, K to the last 7, K2tog, K5
2. Knit all.
3. Knit all.
4. Knit all.
5t. K5, K2tog, K to the last 7, K2tog, K5
Carry on this pattern until you have the necessary cm left on your needle:
New born: 8cm
1 to 3 months: 9cm
3 to 6 months: 10cm
6 to 9 months: 11cm
12 to 18 months: 12cm

Straps:
Knit 6sts, close the centre stitches, K6sts.
Knit the strap 3cm up (shoulder) and then until it reaches the buttonholes at the back as I explain in the video (LINK HERE).

Comments

  1. Question: on the back after the waistband is completed do you include the waistband in total of 12 cm before decreasing?
