About a month ago, I uploaded a YouTube video and blog post explaining how to knit a super easy knitted baby romper for beginners in all sizes and I had a really nice feedback! - (thank you, thank you, thank youuuu!!!) so I decided to make a matching bonnet for beginners that when knitted in cotton is perfect for spring/summer time.
Start by casting on the amount 72 stitches for ages 1 to 3 months.
Materials:
3mm needles
Approx. 50g of wool
1 button (if you choose to do a button strap).
Cast on:
We start by knitting the band in K2,P2 for about 3cm, just as I explain in the video (CLICK HERE TO WATCH)
Continue in plain knitting until the total of your work (including rib) measures 10cm approx..
Shaping the bonnet:
Once you have achieved the centimetres you need for your size, we start shaping the back:
Split your work into three, for 0-3months it is 25sts, 22sts and 25sts.
Now we cast off the first 25sts, knit 22sts and cast off the other 25sts.
Cast back on the 22 remaining stitches (as I explain in the video) and continue knitting until all sides measure the same and then cast off the work.
Sewing up:
Although we have just cast off our work, we now need to sew the sides and pick up the stiches all the way round the bonnet as I explain in the video to create a neckband.
Now its time to decide what kind of strap you want to create for your bonnet:
- A button band.
- An i-cord.
- A ribbon.
- A crochet cord.
- Something else.
I explain some of these methods in my video. (LINK HERE).
Once this is done we have finished the bonnet and it is ready to enjoy!
